City with more than 1.5 million inhabitants, it is the where the highest governmental head quarters stands in the world and is an extremely important industrial, cultural, economic, and political region of Bolivia. IT was founded on the 20th of October of 1548 by Alonso de Mendoza as a bridge between Potosi and the Pacific for the trade of minerals.
It is situated on a great basin that forms a valley on the altiplano, it is well protected from the violent winds from the surrounding pampas, and the city drops more than 800 m. It is situated next to the imposing Cordillera Real de los Andes, with its beautiful mountains like the Illimani (6,438m) and the Huayna Potosí (6,088m), which give it a unique landscape.
La Paz is also the cultural synthesis of Bolivia, which shows in a vivid mix, its rich cultural diversity. Its steep and narrow streets show the peoples dynamic and harmonious adaptation with its geography.
