BOLIVIA
La Paz is the political capital of Bolivia and main tourist destination, due to its strategic geographical position in the foothills of the Andes Range and a great connecting hub with southern Peru and northern Argentina and Chile.
Its a city of contrasts, authenticity and alive, that geographically goes from the high part at 4.000 m through the forming valley down to 3.200m. You’ll walk through typical markets to see the regional production, traditions and believes in the Witches market and the art and craft, rich in weavings, jewelry, ceramic and clothing.
Visit also the colonial part of town, some museums, the cathedral, the government and legislative palace in the main Murillo square, to finally cross the modern part of town towards the Valley of the Moon.
Is the main archaeological site of the Bolivian highlands near lake Titicaca, which served as a ceremonial and administrative center from the XV Century b. C. to the XI a. C.
It was one of the most advanced cultures, with excellent work done in stone carving, ceramics and agriculture, due to the construction of terraces on the hills to avoid erosion and improve irrigation. As well as high raise fields with channels of water, creating a microweather done by the strong sun radiation in the altitude to avoid freeze and draught.
Visit the site seeing the Akapana pyramid, Semiunderground, Kalasasaya and Putuni temples, its monoliths and famous Gate of the Sun, as well as the two local museums with great samples of pottery, stone work, weavings and art done.
Is the highest navigable lake in the world at 3.810 m and an area of 8,562 km2, also part of the international corridor from Cusco/Machu Picchu to La Paz.
The lake was the natural resource for the development of the main Andean cultures in the western highlands, allowing a great development in agriculture.
The trip to Huatajata is 1 hour (86 km), a village at the shores of the small Wiñay Marka part in Lake Titicaca. The area is rich in agriculture, also fishing, kingfish, local orestias and cage production of salmon trout.
You will visit the small house of Paulino Esteban, one of the buiders of the RA II Expedition, done by the Norwegian Thor Heyerdal, using the old technique around Lake Titicaca.
You will take a boat and visit Pariti Island and its museum, Quewaya and Khala Uta and its ruins, to see many tombs of pre-Columbian cultures.
DAY 1
Transportation from La Paz or Puno to Copacabana (3 hours), boat to Island of the Sun (1 hour), land near Pilkokaina ruins and have a typical aptapi. Then hike one hour to overnight in ecolodge La Estancia.
DAY 2
DON’T MISS AN EARLY SUNRISE! Boat north to the Chincana ruins (1 hour), continue to Copacabana, visit the famous Virgen Morena and its church, lunch and a stroll of town. Transportation to Puno or La Paz (3 hours).
Coroico is 96 km from La Paz at 1,525 m, in the subtropical area rich in agriculture, like citrus, banana, coffee and coca plantations. The route has great views with lots of contrasts, it goes up to 4.,650 m at La Cumbre, surrounded by snow capped mountains with glaciers of the Andes Range (Cordillera Real). Then dropping down to 1,150 m at Yolosa in only one hour with a great change entering to the rainforest, the entrance gate to the Amazon. Continue to Coroico, a small colonial town set in the hills with great views of the jungle below and the Andes as backdrop, to enjoy tropical weather, nature and swim in the pool.
A great trip to the Andes Range (Cordillera Real) in the Condoriri area (2 hours).
You’ll be hiking up crossing first one small lagoon and reaching a second of Chiar Khota in the foothills of the Condoriri Mountain (2 hours), where the base camp for many surrounding mountains is at 4,650 m.
Enjoy the beautiful landscape of the range, with mountains, glaciers, llama and alpaca rising, with good chances to see the condor.
Hike back down for one hour and transportation back to the city of La Paz (2 hours).
