Technical Visit to Holambra

Approximately 130 kilometers from São Paulo, this cooperative was created in 1948 by Dutch farmers, located at a city called Jaguarina, in an area of 50.000 hectares. Agricultural and cattle activities were developed by these Dutch farms, such as citrus, cotton, soy bean, sheep and mainly flowers, which take an area of 10.000 hectares for internal distribution and also for exportation. Holambra is the biggest flower exporter to Europe and Canada from Latin America. It’s from an antique Dutch colony responsible for 40 of the flowers and plants commercialized in Brazil. It’s considered the biggest flowers exposition from Latin America. With only 10.000 inhabitants, the small city of Holambra transforms itself every year to seat the “Expoflora”, the biggest flower exposition from Latin America. At this time, the local population increases in more than 2.800% during the event that counts with 90% of the local people working in related activity to the production and trade of plants and flowers. Founded by Dutch immigrants, Holambra maintains the characteristics of the built houses and habits brought by the first inhabitants. During the “Expoflora” we are invited to know a bit more from Holland, there are cultural manifestations in dances in the music and in the typical Dutch cuisine. It reminds Holland in the architecture such in details as the lacework curtains, the windmills, the wooden shoe and typical clothes. At this time, there’s always a Flowers Parade with bands and many attractions. The tour will allow a visit to a flower farm production which can be seen the Garden Center with more than 3.000 square meters where we can see and buy the flowers and plants produced in Holambra.

Museums Tour

This tour objective is to familiarize the visitors of the three of São Paulo's most valued cultural landmarks, which are the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the Museum of Ipiranga and the Memorial of Latin America.  Latin America’s most representative collection of western art, with works by such famous Impressionists and modern masters as Renoir, Van Gogh, Matisse, Debret, Picasso and Miró, awaits us in the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. Some fascinating paintings by Brazilian artists, such as Cândido Portinari and Di Cavalcanti alone are worth the tour. Portinari captured in his canvases the way of life of ordinary people, conveying their joys and sufferings in a dramatic way. Particularly interesting are the pictures of northeastern Brazil done by Dutch artists during the Dutch occupation (1630-1654).  Afterwards, the tour will follow to the Independence Park in the district of Ipiranga. Five and a half kilometres south-east of the city centre, the Independence Park contains the Independence Monument, the Imperial Chapel and the Casa do Grito, a little house built on the spot where Dom Pedro I uttered the famous cry “Independence or Death”. A visit will not be missed to the Museum of Ipiranga, which displays objects, costumes and furniture of the imperial period.  The third cultural attraction included in our tour was designed by Brazil’s poet of architecture, Oscar Niemeyer, and built in 1989. The monumental complex covers an area of 80,000 sq. m (96,000 sq. yds) and consists of seven buildings set around two squares linked by a pedestrian bridge. Outside is a 7 m cement hand with a map of the American continent carved on the palm. It houses the Centre for Latin American studies, an auditorium and a permanent exhibition of handicrafts from all over Latin America. The Athos Hall, in which important decisions of the state government are taken, boasts a large wall painting of Tiradentes by Portinari.  Entrance fees are not included; participants will have to pay directly at each museum. This tour is not offered on Mondays, since the three museums in question are closed.
