Its origins date back to colonial days, when the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia founded it in 1541, along the Mapocho River. He named it Santiago del Nuevo Extremo, in honor of Apostle St. James’s native and his native land, Nueva Extremadura.
Santiago has about five million inhabitants, one third of the total population and its Chile’s political, economic, and cultural center as well as being one of the most important financial centers of South America.
