CHILE
Heading in the direction of the Volcanic Caves, 14.5 km from Pucón along the road to Villarrica,, an interesting and educative visit. One of its more notable features is a tunnel of lava, 200 m in profundity, formed in one of the eruptions that occurred on the Villarrica Volcano. Don’t miss out on the “Volcano House “, where there are photographic memories of prior eruptions and also view the seismographs and other instruments used to detect volcanic activity. Then we will continue on towards the center of Pucon, considered one of the most important tourist resorts in southern Chile, to try our luck shopping at the many attractive boutiques and dine at one of the many restaurants on Fresia Street.
Depart towards Villarrica, a historical city on the shores of Villarrica Lake that was one of the first villages founded in the region by the Spanish conquerors. Here, the Huifquenco estate is located. It is one of the most developed farms in the ninth region that is dedicated to Agrotourism and they offer horseback riding or carriage rides through their tree lined roads and fields to view the daily activities of farm life.
You will be greeted at the stables where basic instructions for riding will be given and from there you will be taken on a tour of the Wild Boar forest, the riding arena, lagoon, native forest and through the fields observing the daily chores of farm life. Upon return a Chilean BBQ awaits you together with one of the most beautiful views of the city, lake and Villarrica Volcano.
Immersed in the beauty and majesty of the Villarrica National Park, near Coñaripe, the Geometricas Hot Springs are the new and original choice for thermal tourism in Chile.
These -or Cajon Negro as they used to be called- are the result of an ambitious project carried out by architect German del Sol. He strived to create a harmonic balance between nature and geometry by constructing the hot springs from mainly wood and raw materials. These hot springs are characterized by an abundant number of thermal fountains, around 60 in all. They spring from the Aihué ravine at temperatures of 176°F (80°C). Another unique characteristic that adds even more attraction to this place is the wooden footbridge that passes through the center and allows you to look around the ravine and choose your favorite pool in which to bathe. Under the footbridge, which is about 1,476 ft. long (450 m), the thermal waters flow into the pools through a wooden channel that directs the water.
Departure from the hotel in the morning and head east 35km from Pucón to Huerquehue National Park with an area of 12,500 hectares. It is characterized by a mountainous area of medium sized peaks and an impressive beauty where valleys, hills, Araucaria (Monkey Puzzle Tree) and Lenga forests, fauna such as the Darwin frog, foxes and Condors are part of the higher elevations. Huerquehue is characterized by its many mountains and has turned into one of the favorites of nature lovers and hikers in the area.
Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel in Puerto Varas/Puerto Montt for the full day excursion to the emerald island of Chiloe. Grande- famed for its misty natural beauty, folklore and warm traditional culture. One hour to the ferry crossing and a thirty minute crossing where you can enjoy the fresh ocean air and hopefully spot sea lions playing in the currents of the Chacao Channel. We'll have a short visit to the village of Chacao, a tiny picturesque hamlet of colorful wood shingled houses that was colonized by the Spaniards in 1567 upon arrival to the island. We'll next visit the tranquil bay of Caulin, home to a great varity of the island's birds as well as local fishermen. Optional oyster tasting for those interested. By midday we'll arrive in the city of Ancud (35,000), last bastion of the Spanish Empire in all of Chile and one of the last in all of the Americas. Lunch in a local restaurant included. Afterwards we'll enter the pastoral Chilote countryside, an area of wetlands, quiet farms and native Valdivian rainforest. Our destination will be the unique penguin colony of Punihuil, the only place in the world where Humbolt and Magallanic penguins nest side by side. If the weather permits, we will tour around the small islands where the penguins nest by boats captained by local fishermen (landing on the islands is not permitted). The area is rich in marine life and is home to a great variety of birds and other fauna. By early evening we will arrive at a local family home in a beautiful setting to enjoy the islands most famous meal- the curanto. This consists of copious amounts of shellfish, smoked meats, potatoes and potato patties mixed with pork (vegetarian options available). After dinner we will say goodbye to our hosts and head back to the ferry dock and the mainland with time to relish the experience of the island's unique natural beauty and cultural charm.
We go on a boat trip to the beautiful island of Peulla which is situated in the Todos los Santos Lake. We depart early in the morning from Puerto Varas to Petrohué and enjoy impressive views of the volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco that dominate the scenery here. When we arrive at Petrohué we have 30 minutes break before the boat leaves to Peulla and crosses the Todos los Santos Lake. If the weather conditions allow it we will be able to see volcano Osorno, the Puntiaguado hill and the Tronador from our boat. After our arrival at Peulla we visit the ecological villa which is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts. A couple of hours later we return to Puerto Varas or to Puerto Montt approximately at 19:30.
We depart from our hotel and drive to the viewpoint of Puerto Montt from where we enjoy a wonderful view of the bay and the volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco. After that we visit the city centre, the main square (plaza de armas) and the cathedral. We continue towards the harbor Angelmó. This part of the city was and still is the centre of commercial activity. Constantly boats that ship products from various islands arrive at this port. The old port down the coastal road is now a tourist attraction: here we find a market on which handicrafts of the area are sold.
Puerto Varas is situated on the south west margin of lake Llanquihue, 20 km from Puerto Montt, and possesses all the poetry of its houses full of roses and the intimacy of the bay.
One can appreciate the evidence of German colonization in their typical constructions and beautiful gardens. The volcanoes Calbuco and Osorno stand out in the horizon. The insertion of different cultures in these desolate difficult territories where nature offers all its beauty but also big difficulties keeps being a strong challenge for man.
Frutillar is located at the Llanquihue Lake in front of the Osorno Volcano and counts 15.500 people. Historically it has been a very important city as it was the place where the first German colonies settled. Frutillar is famous for its music festival “Las Semanas Musicales de Frutillar” that came into being in 1968 and that compromises concerts, operas, choir and jazz music. Another remarkable characteristic of Frutillar are the houses in German style, the beach and the beautiful gardens in the town. You can visit the German Colonial Museum, the amphitheater and the Forest reserve Edmundo Winckler.
