This 400 Km. stretch of the Andes is rightfully known as “The Avenue of the Volcanoes”…It is a breathtaking natural boulevard flanked by impressive volcanoes, and giant peaks covered with glaciers and perpetual snows, towering well above 4, 5 and even 6 thousand meters above sea level. In between, a never ending line of emerald green valleys, dotted with gold-colored fields provide spectacular sights, a paradise for photographers….
Picturesque villages, colorful markets and the ethnic cultures with their rich display of popular art, handicrafts, traditional festivities, music and gastronomy mix here with dramatic landscapes, roaring rivers, small lakes and rocky hills. You can enjoy these views either by road or train, or a combination of both…In this area of the Andes you find the awesome Devil’s Nose, where the train negotiates its way down a steep 300 meter cliff in a series of ingenious switchbacks.
In the extreme south is Cuenca, another World Heritage Site city, fascinating with its colonial architecture, impressive churches and cathedrals, cobble-stoned streets and fine handicrafts, a true gem of history, art and a vibrant center of culture.
