Called General Villamil on some maps, Playas is the closest beach resort to Guayaquil, which makes it crowned and littered during the high season. Playa is also an important fishing village. As result of its proximity to Guayaquil there are many holiday homes in Playas. It is a busy from December to April but quiet at other times. Weekends are much busier than midweek.

For several decades now, it is the vacation spot for the upper class of Guayaquil and one of the favorite destinations for foreign visitors looking for high quality service and comfort.
