MISMINAY PROJECT

Misminay is an Andean community located 3,700m above sea level in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco, Peru. Its population is still very poor and continues to use traditional farming tools and oxen to harvest potatoes, broad beans, wheat, barley and maize. The community also depends on tourism.

Our initiative was born eight years ago when we set out to have the best trained porters and cooks on our adventure programs. When we went to Misminay for recruitment we discovered that the community had no running water, high levels of infant mortality, low attendance at school, unemployment, as well as other factors that could aggravate their situation. We decided to help them and have since increased our training sessions and hired more men, built a community center with one of our clients, donated school supplies and holiday gifts, among other things.

This year, for Condor Travel’s 30th anniversary, we would like to give more to this community and are working to improve their standard of life. Projects include medical campaigns, the restoration of home windows, a new water supply, drainage, and other basic needs.
Men from Misminay work with us on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu as cooks, porters and assistants. A team of experts, including doctors, firemen and environmentalists, train each group separately. Porters, for example, receive updates on equipment use and maintenance, how to use harnesses, evacuation techniques, first aid, hygiene, and environmental protection.

The Misminay women are great weavers and produce a variety of items with traditional colorful designs. We will continue the weaving program this year, which will go in hand with our strategic alliance with artcraft shops. You will find products from Misminay and other Peruvian communities in Cusco and Lima stores.
Our passengers are invited to visit these stores at the end of their excursions and are gifted a picture postcard of Misminay that they can send for free to any part of the world from selected stores in Cusco.

A percentage of the sales made in Cusco will go directly to support our project.
We have also initiated a project called HEALTHY COMMUNITY MISMINAY: Our aim is to empower the community so that it can take its own decisions, by improving the health and education conditions within the community. Doing this involves medical assistance but also incorporates recovering and teaching values, team work, respect, order, cleanliness and improving their relationships with peers.

You can take part in our effort by shopping at Peru Artcrafts (link) stores or by donating (link a mi correo:
