The Cordillera Blanca: Snow, mountains and top adventure

Only 400 km. (248.5 miles) northeast of Lima lies the highest chain of snow-covered peaks in the highlands: the 180 km. (112 miles) long Cordillera Blanca, whose peaks tower over 6,000 meters. The region is easily reached by road from Lima. The Callejon de Huaylas, as the area is also called, is the departure point for treks and mountain climbing within the Huascaran National Park.

Huascaran, with 6,768 meters (22,200 ft.) is Peru’s highest mountain and dominates the spectacular scenery along with the electric blue waters of the Llanganuco lake. A few hours from the city of Huaraz 3,100 meters (10,200 ft.), on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Negra, is Chavin de Huantar, one of Peru’s most renowned archaeological monuments.

Because of its underground galleries, the famous rescue lead by President Fujimori in 1997 on the Japanese Ambassador’s mansion in Lima was named after these ruins.
