You will depart from Cusco in a private vehicle towards Huaran, located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and the starting point of your trek. You will hike for approximately 5 hours, uphill through the lush vegetation of the valley, stopping just for lunch, to your first campsite in Cancha Cancha, a small agricultural community in the middle of the Andes. Once there, you will set up camp and then meet some of the locals and find out about their way of life.

Once over the pass, you will stop for lunch and afterwards begin the descent to the village of Quiswarani, passing through a queñual tree (Polylepis) forest, home to such endangered birds as the Royal Cinclodes, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, and Cucarachero Inca. There will be a short break once you reach the village, and then you begin ascending until reaching beautiful Lake Queuñaqocha, where you will spend the night under a starry sky.

The route ascends to the second mountain pass, Abra Willkiccasa (4100 m / 13,448 ft / 2 hours), this time offering you spectacular views of Mount Colquecruz and Mount Pitusiray. The trail cuts through the ever-changing puna landscape and passes by lakes and farmland, with deer roaming about, until you arrive, 3 hours later, in Cuncani, another small agricultural community from where you will descend into a green, fertile valley, with crop land and other small communities. Along the way, you will find yourself flabbergasted at the variety of native flowers, such as begonias and wild orchids. After a 2-hour hike, you will arrive in Lares, capital of the Lares district, whose number one attraction is its hot springs, where you can take a pleasant dip, if you so desire.

After lunch, you will be transferred in a private vehicle to the town of Ollantaytambo, where you will board the train that takes you to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, you will spend the night in the chosen hotel or hostel.
